The surface of my 3D print has a wavy pattern

If the surface of your 3D print is characterised by a wavy pattern, you will suffer from 'ringing'. This phenomenon is caused by vibrations during 3D printing and/or an unstable, wobbly frame.

How can you solve or prevent ringing?

When your 3D printer suddenly changes print direction, this can lead to vibrations that can often be seen in your 3D print as a wavy pattern. This pattern is most visible on sharp edges and corners. Below we discuss a number of possible causes and solutions for this problem.
  • Reduce the print speed

    When printing at a high speed (>70mm/s), your printer may find it difficult to keep up with this speed. The extra force needed to make certain movements causes vibrations that result in the wavy pattern in your 3D print. Solve this problem by decreasing the print speed at both the 'default printing speed' and the 'X/Y axis movement speed'.
  • Lower the acceleration settings

    The firmware of your 3D printer regulates and prevents abrupt changes in the print direction by means of so-called 'acceleration controls'. This setting ensures that your printer builds up and decreases speed slowly and in a controlled manner to avoid vibrations. Therefore, lower the acceleration settings in your firmware to prevent or reduce ringing.
  • Check your mechanics

    Vibrations can also be caused by loose screws or broken brackets. Therefore, try to trace the origin of the vibrations during printing in order to solve the problem.
