What are filament pellets?

Filament pellets, also called granulate, are coarse plastic granules that are used as raw materials for making different filament types such as PLA, ABS and PETG. These granules are especially popular among enthusiastic 3D DIYers and semi-professionals.

Main properties of filament pellets:

  • Recyclable
  • Can be manufactured in any desired colour
  • Cheaper than ready-made filament
  • Perfect for larger projects

Making filament with granulate yourself is generally up to 60% cheaper than buying ready-made filament. In addition, filament is usually sold per 1, 2, 2.5, 3 and 5 kilos, which can make it challenging to print large objects.

Pellets are (usually) not directly supported by 3D printers and must first be processed with a pellet extruder. This extruder heats the granules until they are liquid, after which they are pressed out of the nozzle as filament. In addition, you can easily recycle 'failed' projects in this way!

Granules are available in different colours, but can also be bought in transparent form. If you opt for the transparent form, you can add your own dyes to create a unique colour.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of filament pellets?

Advantages of filament pellets Disadvantages offilament pellets
Sustainable Time-consuming
You determine the composition of the filament yourself Varying quality
You can created your own colour(s) Difficult to reproduce an identical colour
Saves costs A pellet extruder is essential to be able to use the pellets for your 3D printer

Tips for printing with filament pellets:

  • Store the pellets in an airtight container and in a dry place.
  • Dry the pellets in the oven before use to avoid air bubbles during printing. The duration and temperature depend on the material you choose.
  • Experiment with the settings of your pellet extruder to get the right quality. The print speed and the temperature settings also determine the thickness of the filament.
  • Use a digital or analogue caliper to check the thickness of the filament.

Filament pellets:

  • PLA-pellets
PLA filament is very user-friendly, easy to print with and biodegradable. A responsible choice!
  • ABS-pellets
Looking for a versatile and very strong filament type with good heat resistance? Then this is the right choice!
  • PETG-pellets
The ideal filament that is both strong and flexible. In addition, PETG is fully recyclable and water-repellent!
