3D scanning with your own camera3D scan a physical object and create a digital, three-dimensional image that can be rotated 360 degrees. You can then 3D print this image as a scale model or copy of the original. How about a 3D-printed face of a loved one, a statue you loved while on vacation, or a miniature of your favorite pet?

Good news: you don't need a special 3D scanner to create a 3D image! You can get started right away with your own digital camera or smartphone and free software.

How to make a 3D scan based on photos To create a 360 degree view of a person or object you will need photos from all sides of the subject. Photos showing low and high points together provide a complete picture of the subject. The software ensures that the total image is created from the individual photos.

That is how it works:

Photograph the object about 20 to 40 times from various angles and positions (follow the directions in the 123D Catch smartphone app if necessary).
Upload the photos to the 123D Catch Cloud via the software or app.
The program makes one whole and returns a 3D image.
Adjust the image and remove background objects.
Export the cleaned 3D image as an obj file.
Open the obj file in the Autodesk Meshmixer software on your computer to edit and modify it into a printable file.
Save the file as an stl file for your 3D printer.

Tips: Here's how to take the best photos for a 3D scan

Choose a subject that is accessible from different sides (preferably all sides).

Recognisable background objects come in handy as a reference point for the software.

Do not choose transparent, glasses or other reflective subjects.

Do not choose moving subjects.

Provide consistent lighting (preferably outdoors).

Do not use the flash.

DIY alternative: fixed camera, rotating subjectFor small subjects it is possible to build their own 3D scan setup with, among other things, a DSLR camera, a stepper motor and arduino board. The subject is rotated in steps, while the camera remains in the same place. This setup allows you to take very high quality photos.

Note: no (non-rotating) background objects may be present with this method. If so, you should opt for a method that moves the camera.
